At Counselling in Melbourne, we believe that supporting the wellbeing of our community extends beyond the work we do with clients each day. It also means getting behind organisations and initiatives that are working to create meaningful change for Australians and their families.
That is why we are proud to support Sam’s 1000, an initiative powered by Love Your Sister that is bringing Australian businesses together to help improve access to Precision Medicine for people affected by cancer.
What is Sam’s 1000?
Sam’s 1000 is the latest campaign led by Love Your Sister co-founder Samuel Johnson.
The goal is simple but ambitious: bring together 1,000 Australian businesses to support greater access to Precision Medicine for cancer patients.
According to Love Your Sister, Precision Medicine is not currently available as standard care for all Australians. Through Sam’s 1000, the organisation is working alongside the Australian Genomic Cancer Medicine Centre (OMICO) and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research to help address this gap.
The campaign is ultimately about helping ensure that where someone lives, their age, income or circumstances do not unnecessarily limit their ability to access advances in cancer medicine.
Why We Choose to Support Sam’s 1000
Cancer affects an enormous number of Australian families.
For those navigating a diagnosis, the impact can extend far beyond physical health. It can affect relationships, emotional wellbeing, work, family life and a person’s sense of security about the future.
As psychologists and counsellors, we understand how important appropriate care, support and access to professional services can be when someone is facing a difficult period in their life.
While our role at Counselling in Melbourne is very different from the work being undertaken by cancer researchers and medical professionals, we strongly believe in the value of organisations coming together to support initiatives that can improve people’s lives.
Sam’s 1000 provides Australian businesses with a practical way to contribute to that bigger picture.
It is an initiative built around collective action. One business alone cannot solve the challenges surrounding cancer treatment and research, but many businesses contributing together can help provide additional resources and support.
That is something we are proud to stand behind.
Supporting Greater Access to Precision Medicine
Precision Medicine considers the individual characteristics of a person’s cancer to help inform treatment decisions.
Sam’s 1000 is focused on helping make this approach more accessible to Australian cancer patients, while supporting the scientists, researchers and organisations working in this area.
The campaign recognises that research and medical innovation require resources. Love Your Sister’s message is that businesses and individuals can play an important role by contributing collectively to the work already being undertaken by Australia’s researchers.
For Counselling in Melbourne, supporting Sam’s 1000 is a small way that we can contribute to a cause with the potential to make a meaningful difference for individuals and families across Australia.
How Can Businesses Get Involved?
Sam’s 1000 is calling on businesses across Australia to join the initiative and become one of its supporters.
Businesses can currently participate through several monthly contribution levels:
- Welterweight Champion: $100 per month
- Middleweight Champion: $200 per month
- Heavyweight Champion: $1,000 per month
These different levels make it possible for businesses of varying sizes to become involved and contribute according to their circumstances.
If you own or manage an Australian business, we encourage you to learn more about Sam’s 1000 and consider whether your organisation could join the growing number of businesses supporting the campaign.
How Individuals Can Help
You do not need to own a business to support the broader work of Love Your Sister.
Individuals can help by learning more about the organisation, sharing its message with others, supporting its fundraising efforts or introducing Sam’s 1000 to a business that may be interested in becoming involved.
Sometimes simply starting a conversation can help an important cause reach people who otherwise may never have heard about it.
The more Australians who understand what Sam’s 1000 is working towards, the greater the opportunity for businesses and communities to get behind the campaign.
